Weaning

I haven't been apart of the Breastfeeding blog hop the past few weeks because honestly I just haven't had the time. So while I am not joining the blog hop again this week because I don't know a ton about Low supply (If you are interested in it check out The Slacker Mom's blog - she is AWESOME), but I am going to blog about our current situation of weaning.

About a month ago I stopped offering Gabby nursing opportunities except in the morning and in the evening. Then about 2 weeks ago we decided to wean her at night completely and drop down to 1 time a day in the morning.

I have to say that we picked an awesome week for it. We started on a Wednesday. Mike put her down to bed - which normally is my job unless I am gone. This was hard for her and hard for me but he got her down in about 30 minutes, between changing her diaper, PJ's, reading a few books and cuddling a bit. She slept for a good 12 hours. I nursed her in the morning and she was good. The 2nd night we had a babysitter because we had a dinner to go to. So it was so easy to start that week. That Friday we drove down to my parents. Mike still ended up putting her to bed, she fussed a little, but I just went downstairs and she was fine. That Saturday she slept until just after 6am. - YEAH I got to sleep in.

The next night was a bit harder, but my mom did a great job. Sunday was super easy for Mike and it's been pretty much a dream every since. I am now able to put her down at night within 15 minutes. We get the baby changed, and give her a sippy of milk, cuddle and read a few stories. I turn off her light, ask for a hug, a kiss (I get three) and then I tell her I love her to the moon and back and she reaches (Practically falls) into her crib. I cover her up and head out of the room. She usually goes to bed around 6:30 and sleeps until 5:30. I wish I could get another hour, but beggars can't be choosers.

I have been telling Gabby every morning that she has until Sunday morning and then we are done completely! It's definitely a bittersweet feeling for me. I am excited to be done and have a break from nursing but it's a really good time for us to spend. I told her I still wanted to cuddle in the morning and have breakfast with her. so that's what we will be doing Monday morning. The other nice thing is now I am not the ONLY one that needs to get up with her. Mike can do this now and I can sleep in :)

Some important lessons I have learned about weaning

1. I am REALLY glad I waited until she was a little older. I have to say it's been nice to be able to reason with a 19 month old and tell her that she can nurse in the morning. 95% of the time she understands and says "yeah".

2. It's been so nice to have the support of my hubby.

3. That I am glad I waited until I was ready and she was ready. It made all the difference in the world

What was your weaning experience??

Awesome! I know you were ready! With Drengen, it was a tough one. He was 18 months and still nursing 2-3 times a day. He got hand, foot and mouth virus and stopped nursing (or eating, for that matter) and I just decided that we were done. He wasn't exactly convinced. Lille Pige, we had a gradual process and she was basically stopped herself at about 18 months. She was always a busy bee.

We will see how it goes. I ended up nursing her this afternoon which I haven't done in weeks because she was having a MAJOR and I mean MAJOR meltdown. She was tired, hungry and didn't know what she wanted. So the ONLY thing that calmed her down was nursing. So honestly it makes me a bit nervous to stop her nursing. part of me wonders if I am really ready, but I know I am. She doesn't have these meltdowns ever. In fact this was the first time I haven't been able to distract or calm her down like this. So I was glad at least today we were still nursing, but we will see what happens in the future. Thanks for sharing!
