An online friend of mine wrote this post - a Rant about Kids being Kids. I think that she has a great point and I just wanted to share it.
Her rant is about a 16 year old who stole money from a collection for cancer patient. The cashier that was working while it was stolen stated that "kids will be kids" and she isn't mad at him....I agree with Always in Wonder when she states that a 16 year old should know right from and wrong. If it were my child Gabby would be wearing the scarlet letter that she stole money from cancer patients. I would make her volunteer at the hospital with cancer patients to know who she was stealing from.
A lot of kids these days (listen to me, I sound old now!) - not all because I know plenty of great ones - don't have boundaries when it comes to certain things. It's like bullying....why do they think they can say whatever they want on FB or Myspace, Formspring etc.. without consequences? Because we have let them get away with that....where is the empathy?

Ugh. That is so disheartening to see. Parents need to start teaching kids accountability. Personal story: My Dad and his fiance live together and his fiance's son who is 21 also lives with them. On more than one occasion they have come home from a weekend away to find he has had a party and totally trashed the place. We're talking holes int he walls and broken furniture. My Dad's reaponse? He's *only* 21.
Seriously? If my sisters and I had EVER pulled anything like that I can't even begin to describe the consequences.
16 year olds know right from wrong. 21 year olds know right from wrong. My 2 year olds who are autistic know right from wrong. The problem comes down to authority figures letting them slide on by with a condescending pat on the head as if they have no controlover their actions.
I really hope this isn't something I instill in my kids.
I completely agree with you. Kids learn right from wrong at a very young age. That is NOT an excuse past the age of 5 in my opinion. And teenagers are very smart, with little reasoning skills. NOT an excuse!
Oh to be parents... :) I mean I NEVER stole like that kid, but I know I totally went against my parents' rules. I can only imagine how crazy my kids are going to be. And I DON'T like it. ;P
I still need to get you that post. I have 4 that I am working on. eeehhhgggg. haha.
