So in attempting to have a great first Birthday for my littleone. I have decided I am going to make her a sock monkey cake, that's the theme that we picked and I am determined to make her a cake myself. So today I set out to make the first round because 1. I am not the greatest at this kind of stuff. 2. I have to actually carve the cake and 3. I have to frost it more than just all over.
So here is my first attempt and there is room for A LOT of improvement. Please don't laugh.

The pans before I put in the cake batter....one of the round pans leaked and I had to move the batter to a square pan. |

The batter - homemade I might add. I even sifted the cocoa, flour, sugar and salt together :) |

And here is the final product. Now it's not the coloring I was going for. I want to add in the white and the red mouth etc, but this was mainly to get the cutting of the cake - which apparently I didn't take a picture of it before I frosted it. I also found out that the Pecan frosting is a bear to frost with, so I am going to try to find a brown butter frosting recipe I can use to get the coloring, or find a german chocolate frosting and just not put the nuts and coconut in it....at least I have time. There will at leave be another round of testing. and then I just have to figure out how to make a sheet cake :)
Here is the recipe for the
cake itself that I used and this is what I am trying to
make

Your cake cracked me up! I appreciated the link to what is was suppose to look like. I could definitely see it was a sock monkey after seeing that. I'll bet is tasted delicious!
I like the inspiration cake photo! :-) If you need to borrow some 9" pans (regular cake pans, not springform, so you won't have the leaking issue), you're welcome to mine. I have at least two of them. Also, if you want a good recipe for buttercream icing, let me know. You can then tint the icing the various shades you need and it ends up being a LOT cheaper than buying all of the cans from the store.
Thanks Cheri - I will let you know about the pans, we have a 10" and an 8" that don't leak and those might work out better. But do send me the buttercream recipe.
